December 18, 2014 – Micro UAS Petition Filed with FAA
The UAS America Fund, LLC filed with the FAA a formal Petition for Rulemaking that proposes regulation for the commercial use of Micro UAS. The Petition includes a self-contained set of UAS regulations for commercial and other non-recreational uses, based on a recently completed safety analysis. The UAS Fund’s new Micro UAS rule would govern commercial operations for UAS that meet certain criteria: weigh 3 pounds or less, operated below 400 feet, operated at least 5 miles away from airports, and piloted by an operator with a demonstrated level of aeronautical knowledge.
UAS Market Segmentation Table
The primary intent of the petition is to provide a logical and expeditious path for the commercial use of low-risk UASs. This allows certain businesses to operate UAS legally while further research and rulemaking is conducted for integrating larger and more complex aircraft into controlled airspaces.
